Hurricane Sandy

I got the text class was canceled around 5 pm yesterday when I was about to start my tutoring session. Ever since I received the text, I have been preparing for the storm and checking all my social media outlets to see the storm's status. One outlet I have been checking is the PPL page on Facebook. Since everyone is talking about the possibility the power is going to be out for days, I liked the Facebook page to stay informed. So far I have been able to access an outage map and learn what to do in an outage.

Another outlet I have been using is Twitter. Since we talked about people reporting about the earthquake in China using Twitter, I thought it would be a good way to check the hurricane. So far, I found a good link on the site that posts major updates from the storm. For example, I learned about the NYSE closing and the suspension of all NYC public transit on this site. There were also tweets sent from the hurricane itself which was a bit ridiculous in my opinion. One tweet from the hurricane was "IF UR HAVING WEATHER PROBLEMS I FEEL BAD FOR YOU SON I GOT 99MPH WINDS AND IMA GIVE YOU SOME. #nyc #Sandy"

As I write this post I am watching the weather channel and checking for any changes in the storm. Stay safe everyone!

  1. I've also been relying on social media sites to stay up to date on Hurricane Sandy's impact on my friends and family.
Since I went to high school in Bloomsburg a majority of my facebook friends are from the area. Its interesting to see how many of my "facebook friends" are using facebook to see who needs help, who has power, and how people used it to make sure others were prepared for the storm.
Others of my friends from different parts of the east coast uploaded pictures of the storm as it was happening and the damage it caused.
Its amazing to me how influential Facebook and twitter have become as sources of information of natural disasters. A few of my friends were unaware of the possible severity of storm until people began posting about it on Facebook. Now while I would argue their media literacy and the media messages they are using for information, I suppose Facebook is better than nothing right?

  2. I agree, these sites have become very influential, in more ways than one. Facebook gives the ability to 'like' certain pages, and Twitter provides 'retweeting' and Instagram. I too used Facebook to stay up-to-date with the current situations along the east coast. These methods proved to be faster than the news on TV, but were not always reliable. The most important part of checking Facebook and Twitter became noticing if the source carrying the status or photo was in fact legitimate.
